Term Definition
MAC

A Media Access Control address, or MAC address, is a standard Data Link Layer (DLL) address that is required for every port or device that connects to a Local Area Network (LAN.) Other devices in the network use the MAC address to locate specific ports in the network and to create or update routing tables and data structures. MAC addresses are six (6) bytes long and are controlled by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

MAN

A Metropolitan Area Network, or MAN, is a network that covers a well defined metropolitan area.

MEF

Metro Ethernet Forum

MEF 14

MEF 14 Abstract Test Suite for Traffic Management Phase 1, or MEF 14, verifies compliance with technical specifications as defined by the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF). MEF 14 defines a series of test cases to verify that Carrier Ethernet EPL (Ethernet Private Line), EVPL (Ethernet Virtual Private Line) and ELAN (Ethernet LAN) services delivered by a Carrier Ethernet network at the User Network Interface (UNI) comply with the Ethernet Virtual Connection (EVC) related services performance attributes and UNI related bandwidth profiles services attributes, including the Ethernet Services definitions defined in the MEF technical specifications MEF 6 and MEF 10.

MEF 9

MEF 9 Abstract Test Suite for Ethernet Services at the User Network Interface (UNI), or MEF 9, verifies compliance with technical specifications as defined by the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF). MEF 9 defines a series of test cases to verify that Carrier Ethernet Private Line (EPL), Ethernet Virtual Private Line (EVPL) and Ethernet LAN (ELAN) services delivered by a Carrier Ethernet network at the UNI comply with the functional Ethernet Virtual Connection (EVC) and UNI service attributes, including the Ethernet services as defined in the MEF technical specifications MEF 6 and MEF 10.

MEN

A Metro Ethernet Network, or MEN, is a Service Provider network that provides Ethernet services end customers.

Metro Ethernet Forum

The Metro Ethernet Forum or MEF is an international industry consortium, comprised of leading service providers, incumbent local exchange carriers, network equipment vendors, and miscellaneous networking companies dedicated to the worldwide adoption of Carrier Ethernet networks and services.

Metro Fiber Ethernet

Metro Fiber Ethernet is a computer data network based on the Ethernet standard that serves a metropolitan area. Metro Ethernet services operate on high capacity fiber optic media and connect business subscribers to their branch offices (intranets), the internet and to additional service networks.

MGCP

Media Gateway Control Protocol, or MGCP, is a signaling and call control protocol used by Voice over IP (VoIP) systems that typically interoperate with the public switched telephone network (PSTN). As such, it implements a PSTN-over-IP model with the power of the network residing in a call control center or softswitch, and "lower intelligence" endpoints which simply execute control commands. The protocol represents a decomposition of other VoIP models, such as H.323, where the media gateways (e.g., H.323's gatekeeper) operate with more sophisticated signalling intelligence levels. MGCP uses the Session Description Protocol (SDP) for specifying and negotiating the media streams to be transmitted in a call session and the Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) for framing of media streams.
