SIP Manages User Devices, Availability and Preferences Resulting in Personal and Business Team Productivity Improvements
SIP (Session Initiated Protocol) supports a new model for communications, a significantly more intelligent network, whereby people can specify their communications preferences and level of availability. This feature is known as Presence, making it easier for individuals to reach another. Presence enables people to set their status and availability, controlling how and when they prefer to be contacted before a communication session even begins, thereby increasing productivity by making it easier to reach each other with greater efficiency.
Many devices can publish presence information, which is particularly powerful when integrated across each device within a single person’s communications portfolio, such as IP phones, mobile smartphones, softphones, wireless devices and PDAs. Presence is not limited to a single person as it can also be applied to a group of people, i.e. Customer Service, or Warehouse, to indicate individual or collective device status such as Phone is Off-Hook, Away From Keyboard (AFK), or Video Calling is Available. Presence information is accessible to both people and applications, providing the opportunity to create converged, next-generation communication applications. For example, your network can deliver new capabilities such as polite calling, calls that are less disruptive for the party being called based on information from a calendar application. A more routine use, for example, would be SIP routing calls to an assistant, when an executives status is busy, eliminating the need for the caller to leave a voice mail, while enabling the executive to stay focused on an important meeting.
Increasingly within the last few years, business communication has quickly become highly device-centric. As the number of unique communication devices used grows, more numbers and addresses are required to be known to reach you and others. Familiar sayings including "I sent an IM" or "I'll try his cell" is further evidence of trying to reach an individual at any particular time is often a game of chance without the benefit of SIP presence. When SIP is deployed, communications are user-centric, making it easier for you to reach your customers and for your customers to reach you. A SIP AOR (Address Of Record) provides a single identifier, mappable to multiple devices and media types. No more keeping track of multiple phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and IM handles or names. Using SIP, callers utilize an intuitive, simple to navigate user-centric interface, including status and availability information. Then SIP does the rest, efficiently connecting the parties, without regard to location, using the IP device(s) and mode(s) preferred by the call recipient.
