A Media Access Control address, or MAC address, is a standard Data Link Layer (DLL) address that is required for every port or device that connects to a Local Area Network (LAN.) Other devices in the network use the MAC address to locate specific ports in the network and to create or update routing tables and data structures. MAC addresses are six (6) bytes long and are controlled by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
